The University of Iowa College of Nursing seeks a doctorally prepared, certified nurse anesthetist to serve as a clinical-track faculty member and Associate Program Director (APD) for the Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing. The APD is responsible to provide instructional content in a variety of courses and assist guest lecturers and clinical instructors to provide didactic or clinical education; assist the Program Director in administration of the program and, when necessary, function as the program leader in the Director̢۪s absence; interact with faculty, clinical site coordinators, college and university personnel, and accreditation bodies to maintain program integrity. This is a 50% Clinical-track faculty position with administrative responsibilities.

Responsibilities

Teaching:
1. Provides primary instruction to courses within the Anesthesia Nursing Program as assigned (minimum two course per semester).

2. Provides didactic and clinical mentorship to SRNAs throughout their program.

3. Assists in coordinating anesthesia specialty course offerings; relieving guest lecturers of clinical duties as needed so they can provide their didactic lectures.

4. Assists with mentoring/supervision of SRNA Capstone clinical leadership projects.

5. Assist with development of additional curriculum as needed to meet or exceed Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) standards for the education of nurse anesthetists.

6. Expand/ develop instructional content and evaluation metrics for senior SRNA clinical rotation courses in Obstetrical, Cardiac, Rural/Regional anesthesia and Pain Management.

Administrative:
1. Coordinates student registered nurse anesthetist (SRNA) scheduling for all clinical rotations and communicates clinical rotation schedules to Program Director, Program Coordinator, UIHC anesthesia scheduling office, and all clinical site scheduling offices.

2. Monitors Medatrax case statistics and verifies that SRNAs are receiving appropriate clinical experience for their level of training and to meet Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) and National Board of Certification and Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA) requirements.

3. Engages in College of Nursing faculty governance as evidenced by meeting attendance and committee membership.

4. Assists in maintaining Anesthesia Nursing Program compliance with accreditation agencies, University of Iowa, and UIHC Department of Anesthesia policies.

5. Serves in the role of program director during the director̢۪s absence.

6. Participates in accreditation material preparation, reports, reviews, and site visits.

7. Represents the program at one Iowa Association of Nurse Anesthetists meeting and one American Association of Nurse Anesthetists meeting or similar professional meeting annually.

Selected candidate will be required to successfully:

  • Complete credentialing by the medical staff office of University of Iowa Hospital and obtain full privileges as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is required.
  • Complete registration with the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration in order to obtain and maintain a Controlled Substance Registration Certificate and with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy to obtain and maintain a Certificate of Registration, Iowa Controlled Substance Act is required.
  • Obtain and provide a National Provider Identifier number and related information.
Education Requirement:
Graduate of an accredited College of Nursing; graduate of an accredited program of nurse anesthesia with current certification by the NBCRNA; terminal graduate degree (Research or Practice Doctorate; DNP Preferred) from an accredited institution of higher education. Required Qualifications:
  • Maintains clinical expertise by providing clinical anesthesia services (minimum one day per week).
  • Documented clinical proficiency in anesthesia (demonstrated knowledge of principles and theory of anesthesia - management, equipment, techniques and procedures).
  • Documented teaching experience (clinical and didactic) in an anesthesia nursing program.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting an inclusive environment that attracts and retains a diverse workforce and/or student body.
  • Ability to work collegially with others.
Certifications:
Eligible for licensure to practice nursing in Iowa and certification for advanced practice by the Iowa Board of Nursing. Desirable Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in teaching and curriculum development.
  • Initiative, creativity and vision in program development and evaluation.
  • Leadership and personnel management skills, with demonstrated responsibility and accountability for educating nurse anesthesia students.
  • Commitment to collaborative anesthesia practice.
  • Sound communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to educating anesthetists for and in rural communities, especially in Iowa.
