DUTIES:
The incumbent will perform Polysomnography (sleep studies) as a Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography) working for the Neurology Service. Responsibilities will be Polysomnography recordings, PAP and oxygen titrations. Polysomnography duties include performing a full range of standard, but complex, Polysomnography examinations. Incumbent will adhere to AASM guidelines/standards in respect to procedures, sleep scoring, and PAP titration. Incumbent must has knowledge of PAP devices, mask interface, sleep scoring and sleep disorders Technician will be able recognize various types of apnea REM behavior and other sleep disorders. The applicant will be working nights/weekends on a rotating schedule. Applicant must be organized, able to follow directives, and ability to document detailed testing events. Technician will provide excellent customer service, timely, effectively, and efficiently. High organizational skills with ability to prioritize are desirable. Certification is highly recommended within 2 years of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
At least 1 year of experience which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. Six months of experience may have been in medically related fields such as nursing assistant, practical nursing, or similar fields. The remaining six months must have been in operating diagnostic and therapeutic equipment covered by this occupation.

OR Successful completion of a bachelor's degree in a major field of study appropriate to medical instrument technician functions.

Incumbent must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of basic medical terminology

2. Ability to learn the components, operating characteristics, and settings of the equipment to be used.

3. Ability to learn typical patient reactions to the basic procedures involved and ability to recognize signs of distress.

4. Ability to learn the standard positions for the procedure being conducted.

5. Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Requirements:
U.S. Citizenship.

English Language Proficiency; Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II,Chapter 2,Section D, paragraph 5a.

Physical Requirements; See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

GS-06 and above: One year of experience directly related to this occupation equivalent to the next lower grade. Graduate education or an internship meets the experience required when it is directly related to the work of the position.

Certification: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are desirable but not required
