! DUTIES:
As a Nursing Assistant in the Medicine Service Lines at the Iowa City VA Health Care System, Iowa City, IA you will perform a wide range of patient personal care, diagnostic services, treatment and charting activities on a regular and continuing basis. The incumbent delivers safe and individualized nursing care to patients with multiple and complex needs and performs in such a way as to promote a sense of worth and dignity for the individual. The incumbent should possess basic understanding of the total patient program, understanding of simple scientific facts and principles, a broad spectrum of technical skills, adaptation of procedures to meet individual patient needs, and recognition of the relatedness of patients' behavior and physical condition.
Hours:
Every other weekend on rotational basis.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
GS-4 Level: Six month of general experience and six months of specialized experience.
GS-5 Level: One year of specialized experience, which is at ! least equivalent to the GS-4 level.
Certification: basic certification is required as a CNA by a State for all grade levels. Once certified, CNAs must maintain a full active and unrestricted certification to remain qualified for employment. Loss of certification will result in removal from the GS-621 CNA series and may result in termination of employment.
General experience: Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position or that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized experience: Experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, i.e., providing personal nursing care to patients, support duties for diagnostic and technical procedures, observing, recor! ding, and reporting changes in patient behavior, assisting physicians and nurses.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE:
GS-4 Level: Successful completion of a 2-year degree program in an accredited community college, junior college, or college or university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for a psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician.
GS-5 Level: Bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects related to the position. A transcript or course listing must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
Specialized Experience: Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of! a home health aid performing duties such as: Providing personal nursin! g care such as providing pre- and post-operative care. Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus. Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement. Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The work of this position is primarily sedentary. Physical demands do not exceed those of a typical office setting. There may be some walking, standing, twisting, turning, sitting, pushing, bending, repetitive keyboarding or carrying of light items. Please also see VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
