Health Aide

Location: Des Moines, Iowa

Position available from mid-May, 2018 through end of August or September, 2018.

Must be able to attend four training days from May 29 - June 1, 2018, including some evenings.

We are looking for 10 to 15 bilingual Summer Health Aids to provide general medical care to nonâ€'acutely ill patients.

Proteus schedules health care clinics where migrant farmworkers in areas where they are working and living. And the care is provided during hours of the day and evening when the workers are available for care. At these clinics, medical staff providers, along with Proteus staff, conduct health histories, vital exams such as blood pressure, temperature, height and weight, and blood profiling.

Responsibilities and Duties

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assist in providing firstâ€'aid to farmworkers.
• Assist in instructing farmworkers in what they can do about common health problems before they are able to get to a doctor or clinic.
• Translate for farmworkers to assist PA, doctor, or nurse.
• Accurately take temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, height, weight, and vision screening and limited lab tests.
• Accurately complete patient intake, encounter, and voucher forms.
• Record health histories in patient's chart in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Assist in communicating patient observations and behavior pertinent to that patient's plan of care as directed.
• Assist health care team members with examinations or procedure within boundaries of job, when assigned.
• Implement medical provider's orders as directed.
• Attend meetings and inâ€'service program pertinent to own practice.
• Assist medical provider with procedures, exams, treatments, and/or referrals when necessary.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Sufficient education to be able to demonstrate the ability to fulfill the responsibilities of this position. Such abilities might normally be demonstrated by a candidate having completed an LPN, Medical Assistant or Certified Nurse Aide training program from an accredited school.

Specific Skills: Bilingual Spanish/English required for 8 to 10 of the available positions; English only for 2 to 5 of the positions.

License and Certificates: Access to reliable transportation, valid driver's license and minimum car insurance as required by state law.

Physical Requirements : Ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Must possess the physical capabilities to perform the following: reaching, handling, talking, hearing, seeing, standing, walking, stooping, and bending.
