:

Provides professional emergency nursing care for acutely ill and ! injured patients incorporating the nursing process of all age groups, neonate, infant, child adolescent, adult and geriatric.

Provides patient and family education.

Serves as a patient advocate and liaison with other health care providers.

Serves as a preceptor for new employees and students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

:

Applies professional emergency nursing skills in the care and treatment of acutely ill and injured patients utilizing the nursing process; assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation.

·

Promotes patient-centered care through:

Emotional support and alleviation of fear and anxiety

Collaborates with the patient, significant others, and ancillary departments to create a multidisciplinary healthcare team whose goal is to provide care that is continuous and well coordinated.

Provides for actual and anticipated education needs and includes education to meet these needs in the plan of care.

·

Communicates proactively to the healthcare team the plan of care, changes in the patient’s condition, the patient’s progress, the discharge plan and other relevant information.

·

Must quickly, efficiently and calmly respond to emergent and critical situations.

·

Manages the complex care of critically ill and injured patients.

·

Triages patients quickly and efficiently per the Emergency Department’s policies specific to Triage.

·

Documents a comprehensive patient record that is organized and complete reflecting all asp! ects of nursing care provided.

·

Anticipates patient’s needs and assists the physician during the examination and procedures.

·

Provides psychological support based on assessed need.

·

Utilizes multiple teaching methods.

Discharge instructions are reviewed and understanding acknowledged by the patient/family.

·

Assess community resources as indicated.

·

Supervises Emergency Department Technicians.

·

Serves as a preceptor for students and employees (i.e.

EMS

, nursing, new employees).

·

Checks and maintains medical equipment and supplies.

·

Self directed for clinical competency and attendance at department meetings.

·

Works independently using the Nurse Practice Act, hospital and department policies and professional judgment.

Makes recommendations to improve the Emergen! cy Department’s Standards of Care.

Qualifications

M! INIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

:

·

Possess a current license as a registered nurse issued by the State of

Iowa

.

·

One year of RN experience preferred

OR

·

New graduate if the candidate has completed senior nursing preceptorship at Mercy Emergency or previous experience as an emergency department technician or experience in a pre-hospital environment.

·

Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.

·

Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained

by the end of the orientation period (approximately six (6) weeks).

·

ACLS provider, and complete TNCC and MENCC Course within six months of employment.
