The VA Central Iowa Health Care System provides a full continuum of care between the Des Moines campus and our Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCÂ's) and is one of the Medical Centers that make up the VA Midwest Health Care Network

(VISN 23).

Employee selected may be expected to perform duties at other duty sites within VA Central Iowa Health Care System based on the needs of the organization.

Note:
The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-5.

The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-2 to GS-5. The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidateÂ's education and experience and recommend the grade and step at w! hich the candidate will be placed.

DUTIES:
Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday;

8:00a.m. - 4:30p.m.

Pharmacy Phone Technicians primarily spend time in the Pharmacy Phone room.

Pharmacy Technician, as defined by Assignment: this position functions as a pharmacy technician primarily in the Des Moines Pharmacy Services, but may also extend to patient care areas at any CIH location. Duties may include (with reference to the pharmacy technician! functional description), but are not limited to, those listed below.

The Pharmacy technician who works in the Phone room responsible for:

·

Communicating verbally and in writing with veterans, caregivers and healthcare professionals in the provision of medication therapy.

·

Responding to questions from veterans, caregivers and healthcare professionals in the provision of on-going medication therapy (within the scope of the pharmacy technician as outlined by the Board of Pharmacy).

·

Completing notes in the medical record and forwarding to the appropriate individual.

·

Tracking the status of prescriptions, including the status in the Scriptpro machine and the status by the delivery carrier (e.g. UPS), and relaying the information to the veteran, caregiver and/or healthcare professional.

·

The Incumbent must have advance knowledge of pharmaceutical and therapeutic agents, ! over the counter medications and a particularly through knowledge of co! ntrolled substances.

·

The candidate must demonstrate and maintain integrity, reliability, consistency and professionalism.

·

The incumbent must demonstrate and maintain the skill set to utilize the pharmacy phone system.

Preferred Qualifications(Individuals who meet these preferred qualifications will be considered prior to individuals without the preferred qualifications):

CPhT certification

·

Registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Experience.

None beyond the basic requirement.

Edu! cation or Experience.

Completion of 1 year of post-high school coursework related to medicine (e.g. chemistry, biology, college mathematics, etc.), or successful completion of a 1 year accredited pharmacy technician training program, or 6 months of general experience, that may have included experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, laboratory technology, etc.).

In addition,

the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

Ability to maintain appropriate files.

Ability to prepare sterile compounds under supervision.

3

.

Ability to communicate with patients and other health professions.

GS-4:
Education or Experience.

Successful completion of 2 years above high school with courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology, or 1 year of general experience that may have included experience in another medical fi! eld (licensed practical nurse, laboratory technology, etc.)

Su! ccessful completion of a course for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training obtained in a training program conducted by the Armed Forces or the U.S. Maritime Service under close medical and professional supervision is creditable on a month-for-month basis for general experience.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

Ability to operate and maintain dispensing equipment.

Ability to operate pharmacy information systems.

Ability to maintain appropriate files.

Ability to prepare sterile compounds under supervision.

GS-5

:

Education or Experience.

Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelorÂ's degree that included! at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of experience required for the GS-5 level; or at least 1 year of experience at the next lower level that demonstrates the core competencies (KSAs) described at the GS-4 level.

In addition,

the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment.

Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique.

Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.

Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.
